The City of London may not be the first choice of neighbourhoods for a relaxing evening, yet the Back Room wine bar, half-hidden to the rear of popular restaurant Kitty Hawk, is a must-visit. It offers the perfect balance between intimate hideaway and sociable hang-out spot.
Presided over by the restaurant’s wine expert, Adam Elsden, the Back Room has a carefully curated wine list that changes weekly. There is a constant focus on English wines, which are a passion of Elsden. Naturally, everything on the list is carefully selected by him and his team, who are on hand to talk guests through the expertly chosen varieties.
While undoubtedly the wine is the star attraction here, the menu is also very enticing. It offers a selection of delectable small plates and boards, with outstanding charcuterie that includes Suffolk salami and chorizo, and with equally appetising cheese (especially a delicious Cornish cheddar) that underlines the bar’s distinctly British vibe.
Add to the mix a fantastically curated playlist, sumptuous interiors and incredibly attentive service and it’s surprising the Back Room has managed to keep its hidden gem status since opening earlier this year. It is clear that the bar is the new crowning jewel of the British capital’s wine bar scene.
