The shoes with the most recognisable soles in the world, Christian Louboutin’s towering stilettos, lace-up boots and jewelled trainers with distinctive patent red bases have become synonymous with glamour and exaggerated femininity. This summer, London’s Design Museum is commemorating Louboutin’s 20th anniversary with a retrospective that looks at the evolution of his iconic designs, from his original sketches to the finished products. The inspiration behind some of his most acclaimed works will also be explored, with fantasy and fairytale styles exhibited alongside landscape and travel-inspired pieces. The exhibition, which opens on 1 May and runs until 9 July, will fully demonstrate Louboutin’s artistry and love of theatricality and is sure to appeal to footwear fans and design devotees alike.
