Although she works with traditional jewellery materials – precious metals and stones such as gold, silver and diamonds – Solange Azagury-Partridge has always been inclined to design unusual pieces which stand out from the more classical designs normally found in these materials.
‘I’m trying to keep myself interested because it can be perceived as being very commercial working in those materials,’ Azagury-Partridge said at a recent discussion at London’s Design Museum. ‘I like to try and subvert.’ Early pieces featured round uncut diamonds, ‘which I suppose is the opposite of what diamonds are supposed to be: bright, shiny, glittering’.
Azagury-Partridge’s designs are about expressing who she is and she hopes that the wearer finds a way to express themselves through her designs as well. ‘It’s very personal. It’s very much an expression, self expression; it’s adornment, it’s beauty,’ Azagury-Partridge explained.
Azagury-Partridge’s Heart of Gold pendant embodies her approach to jewellery design. The pendant is made from 18-carat yellow gold and is moulded in the finest detail, while the biologically accurate representation of the heart adds a fun element to the design which would make it a perfect gift for a loved one with a quirky sense of humour.
