As Jonathan Saunders is the winner of the 2012 BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, expectations were high for his show. Happily, he didn’t disappoint; everything from his venue on the 20th floor of the Broadgate Tower to his detailed, menswear-influenced collection was a delight.
Saunders’ trademarks all featured and the tone was refined by the use of opulent fabrics, rich clashing colours and a fine harlequin check threaded throughout the collection. His signature sportswear was seen in the playful visors that adorned many models’ heads and the V-neck golfing jumpers in colourful checks, while there were also flashes of metallic, 70s paisley prints and graphic florals that deviated from the overall theme.
The strongest looks had a tailored, masculine feel, featuring well-cut trousers teamed with slim-fit jackets and highly coloured shirts in colour combinations that shouldn’t have worked but did, such as emerald green with orange and brown and golden lime with pink.
The attendees, including Anna Wintour, Olivia Palermo, Hamish Bowles and Pixie Geldof, all looked suitably impressed by Saunders’ new sophistication.
