There is something quite extraordinary about the Bodydoctor’s Belgravia studio, which offers a unique alternative to your average glossy London studio – loud music and whether or not your trainer is Instagram-famous are not the focus at this elite space. The InResidence Fitness collaboration brings together two leading brands in health, fitness and nutrition to provide bespoke treatment plans tailored to the needs of each client’s individual fitness goals, whether you’re working on fat loss, focusing on rehabilitation with an ongoing injury or want to improve your general overall health and wellbeing.
David Marshall, aka the Bodydoctor, shot to fame for transforming a host of celebrity clients, from Kate Moss to Meg Matthews and Lilly Allen. And remember when Sophie Dahl went from a size 16 to a size 12? That was all down to the Bodydoctor’s personal training regime. There’s even a book and e-book for the Bodydoctor fitness and nutrition programme with glowing 5-star reviews. One thing you won’t find here are any fad diets – as Marshall puts it, ‘they simply do not work.’
After 10 years of regularly attending gym classes, Global Blue’s digital editor Kirsty Welsh discovered that she has been doing squats and chest presses so wrong. ‘After attending hundreds of 7am gym classes, I kind of thought I knew a thing or two about working out – well, that’s what I thought until I entered a month of back-to-back personal training sessions at the Bodydoctor studio.’
Located inside a working church in the heart of prestigious Belgravia, and spread over 3,500 square feet of space that is equivalent to four studios, Bodydoctor HQ is the most unique fitness space that our digital editor has ever experienced. Instead of heavy, pounding music and dark lighting, this boutique-style personal training studio has a sleek minimalistic colour palette with luxury finishes and roomy showers stocked with everything you need post-workout.
The studio is fully equipped with an impressive range of cardio machines and fitness equipment that cover everything you could ever want and more – some of the machinery was like nothing our digital editor had ever experienced before in a gym, which is another reason this space so unique.
The Bodydoctor team includes three fully qualified trainers with expertise in every aspect of personal training and nutrition – a rather refreshing and rare find in London at the moment, where the fitness industry includes some trainers with limited fitness experience. The Bodydoctor trainers will guide you through a dedicated fitness plan to reach your desired end goals. Kirsty explained that her focus was resistance training. ‘There isn’t any jumping up and down doing burpees here; instead the team create a carefully calculated and effective programme of performance and technique, and form is key. I learnt techniques like the perfect squatting position to chest presses, which I hadn’t realised I was doing so wrong – as my regular classes had 40 people in them, it’s hard for a trainer to keep an eye on every single client’s form at the same time. The top tip I learnt is that when in doubt, break down the movements and go for a lighter weight until you get the technique perfected.’
An especially enjoyable aspect for Kirsty was that she never felt on top of other clients, even with four trainers in at a time in the studio – the space is well managed and discreet. There is no stressful run to the showers and it is just a calm and relaxed way to start the day.
Since completing a month of training with the Bodydoctor – which more than lives up to its name – our regular gym-goer has cut back on her workout schedule: ‘Where I would normally squeeze in a workout six times a week, I’ve limited my sessions to four quality sessions a week and choose my training plan wisely by opting for more quality low-impact classes to suit my needs and avoid future injuries.’
