Olga Pekarevskaia, founder of luxury London-based jeweller Maya Gemstones, talks exclusively to Global Blue about her passion for gemstones and what makes Maya Gemstones so unique, innovative and different to traditional jewellery cuts
How did Maya Gemstones come about?
I’ve always had a strong passion for gemstones, which led me to the idea of creating a new cut. The jewellery market is oversaturated with round cuts, cushion cuts, princess cuts, solitaires and marquises – people are looking for something new, innovative and different. I wanted to create a unique triangle-shaped diamond that would surpass more traditional cuts in clarity and reflection.
What makes Maya Gemstones stand out from other jewellery brands?
Our brand is centred around our unique, patented triangle-cut diamond. It features in all of our collections, in every piece.
What is a typical day like for you?
I am a mother of three children and the owner of four different businesses, so my day is full of care, creation and inspiration.
What has been your bestselling item so far?
The Sonya 8 necklace and the Sonya 9 ring have been the most popular so far. We’ve also had great feedback on our Saturn collection – particularly the ring. You can open it up and store a wish inside.
What are your favourite things about London?
Most of all I love the parks, but also the opportunity to get around without a car. In this city, past, present and future exist in harmony with each other, and you can simply get inspiration just travelling from one area to another. I love the intellectual property of people who live in London, I find it really inspiring – and the education system, of course.
What’s your most treasured creation yet?
What inspires you to create new collections?
London, traveling and my dreams.
How long does it take to create a Maya Gemstones piece?
Each collection and each piece is different, and has a different creative process. It always depends on the muse and the inspiration behind the piece. Recently, I created two new collections in just a couple of days – although sometimes the process is a lot more intricate and it takes longer for the pieces to be in the right form.
Who would you like to see wearing your designs?
I see this person as a fan of technology and minimalism; someone who chooses quality not quantity; ethical; conscious of the world around them. In terms of famous faces, I would say Ellie Goulding and Tilda Swinton are the kind of people I can see wearing my pieces.
What’s next for Maya Gemstones?
I would like to take my unique triangle cut to a higher level in the jewellery market. I would also like to collaborate with artists to create pieces related to the triangle shape.
