Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m the co-owner of Barry’s in the UK and a master trainer here at our London studios. My life is basically an episode from Modern Family – I live with my Colombian wife Erika, my stepson Guille, our new baby Leo and one brother called Rob. I work with my other brother James and his wife Anya. And it’s great fun!
How did you get into fitness?
I’ve pretty much always been into fitness, teaching or instructing since I was 16. I have at various ages coached football, scuba diving and tennis – and then we discovered Barry’s and the rest is history.
How does your typical day go?
The best part of my job is there’s no typical day, really. Take the other day – I taught my morning class, jumped into a meeting with my managers, rushed off to row on the Thames for a charity event, literally got taken off the boat in the middle of the river by a motor launch to make a meeting at Canary Wharf, then went to our East studio to take class myself. I got home at 9pm and flopped!
What’s your favourite workout wear?
Barry’s branded tops and shorts, Nike socks and trainers and Calvin Klein underwear, haha!
Which are the most comfortable trainers to wear to Barry’s?
Nike Pegasus – still the best running shoes.
Which sports watch do you prefer?
I have an Apple Watch but my day-to-day watch is a simple Casio. I’m trying to get away from stats and numbers and data. I can do without that stuff when I work out.
What’s your top pre and post workout fuel?
Pre-workout I just have a bottle of water and peanut butter and banana. Afterwards I have a shake from Barry’s Fuel Bar. My fave is a Muscle Beach – vanilla whey protein from our own brand Hermosa, coconut water, ice and glutamine.
What are your grooming essentials?
Hanz de Fuko Quicksand for hair, House 99 beard and hair balm for stubble, L’Oréal face moisturiser for moisturising, House 99 Cool Off deodorant for, erm, deodorising and Piz Buin sunscreen for screening sun.
Which are your favourite headphones for working out?
Beats Studio 3s, or my BeatsXs if I’m more on the move.
Talk us through your top workout playlist.
If I had to pick one artist, it would be Eminem. Or Kanye. No, wait, Jay-Z. OK – all of them, and sprinkle in some house remixes for the cardio.
How often do you train?
Five Barry’s classes a week.
Any quick gym beauty hacks?
I’m a boy, so do I count? Baseball cap all the way.
Which are your favourite and least favourite exercises?
Favourite, the renegade row. Least favourite, burpees – they’re great, but I still hate them.
