Burlington Arcade is England’s oldest and longest shopping arcade. Located in the heart of Mayfair, it has linked Piccadilly with Bond Street since 1819 when it was first unveiled to critical acclaim.
Now home to more than 40 specialist shops and boutiques, it remains a haven of luxury where you can find designer brands including Lulu Guinness and Church’s, along with Jimmy Choo’s only menswear boutique. The covered promenade was commissioned by Lord George Cavendish, partly to prevent passers-by from throwing litter into his garden at Burlington House (now the Royal Academy).
A small team of beadles was recruited from Cavendish’s family regiment to enforce the rules of the arcade, which banned running, opening an umbrella and whistling, among other things, some of which still apply. The beadles – in their gold-braided top hats – also remain a feature of Burlington Arcade, helping it retain the charm of the old while still embracing the new.
