Before you even begin to think about how you want your bespoke piece to look, it’s imperative you spend some time picking the perfect designer. Not only is it key to select someone whose designs you love, it’s also important that you understand their ethos and work ethic. You’ll end up spending a large amount of time together during the design process so you need to be sure you’re on the same wavelength.
The designers at Suzie Turner, whose pieces have been worn by the likes of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Selena Gomez, believe the key to a successful bespoke piece is all in the consultation. ‘You need a completely unique consultation to grasp the client’s personality, style and the event they are thinking of wearing the piece to. A consultation should be the most personalised service.’
The process will consist of many consultations where you will be sitting down with the designer and working together, and it’s perfectly acceptable to bring in photos and fabrics as well as other garments to illustrate the silhouettes, cuts and styles you like.
During your consultations, never be shy about expressing exactly what you require from your garment. If there is a feature you don’t like or think would look better elsewhere be sure to tell the designer how you feel. A bespoke piece is custom-made for you, so never settle for anything less than perfection.
Remember, excited as you are about your bespoke piece, you will have to be patient. There is a reason one-off pieces are as beautiful as they are – garments are made painstakingly by hand and this takes time. A bespoke piece requires hours of craftsmanship, punctuated by a number of fittings, typically six to eight for a evening gown. Don’t become frustrated: the toiles (the prototypes that ensure a perfect design and fit before the final garment is made) must be corrected to the millimetre before the final piece is handmade.
Buying a bespoke garment is a unique experience and should also be a pleasure. Everything about the process is tailored to suit you, from design meetings to fittings, and the end goal is creating something you feel sensational in, so be sure to enjoy every second of it.
As the team at Suzie Turner states, nothing can compare to buying bespoke. ‘It is a beautiful journey of self-discovery and is a unique process designed to create the perfect piece. You will finish the process with a unique art piece made with the most luxurious fabrics, spectacular embellishment and flawless finishings.’
