A five-star hotel mere moments away from the beach and port, The Serras is one of the best boutique hotels in Barcelona. The building itself was the home of Pablo Picasso’s first ever studio and The Serras boasts the young and trendy clientele that you’d expect from a venue with such heritage. With its contemporary interior design, fascinating history, superb location and impeccable service, the hotel offers a stay that you will remember forever. From the minute you are seated to check in, and welcomed with warm flannels, house chocolates and refreshments such as cava, orange juice and coffee, you get the impression that no request is too much for the staff at The Serras.
The hotel is situated in the magnificent Gothic Quarter and, with its wealth of restaurants, bars and boutiques, the area is hard to beat. Facilities at The Serras include a gym, which is small but has everything you need for a good workout, as well as Informal, a fantastic Michelin-starred restaurant serving delightful Catalan dishes. We’d question whether you’d find a better breakfast menu and buffet in all of Spain and the impressive selection offers everything from traditional Spanish meats to pastries and cakes. There’s also a rooftop area, with a shallow pool to paddle in when the Spanish heat is just a little too much, and a bar offering stunning views of the port. Rooms feature a coffee machine, large modern bathroom and a bed that’s so luxurious it should probably come with a warning sign.
Although the hotel provides everything you could ask for – including an iPad, iPhone or laptop, for example – and showcases exactly the kind of opulence that you’d hope to find at a five-star hotel, it’s also marvellously unpretentious. You don’t need to be shy about asking seemingly obvious questions, such as where the local landmarks are or how to say a basic phrase in Spanish, as every member of staff is eager to help. Michelin stars and Picasso heritage aside, it’s the warmth that truly sells The Serras.
