Having graduated from London’s Central Saint Martins with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, designer Kathleen Hanhee Kye made her debut with her label Kye in autumn/winter 2011/12 at London Fashion Week. She was regarded as one of the designers to watch for her spring/summer 2012 collection and after making her Seoul Fashion Week debut during the spring/summer 2013 season, she rapidly became one of the fashion creatives most admired in the Korean pop world. She then appeared at New York Fashion Week as a member of Concept Korea, which is a collective of celebrated young designers, and she proceeded to stage shows there for five seasons, until autumn/winter 2014. She was also one of the 30 finalists of the LVMH Prize. Kye has since garnered attention from Vogue, MTV, Forbes and Reuters among others, and has been proclaimed as a trailblazer of new fashion trends.
The Kye label emphasises fun and humour and has a funky yet high-end streetwear vibe. Kathleen Hanhee Kye is particularly admired in the fashion world for her flair in turning artistic motifs into creations that are very wearable and have strong appeal to consumers.
The Kye autumn/winter 2017/18 collection focuses on a mix of textures and fabrics and has a range of designs. The collection reflects the designer’s definition of a feminine look and her unisex street styling.
Dollar motifs, leopard prints and smiley emoji graphics were developed for the range. Different colour palettes highlight the multi-textured fabrics and the development of interesting printing techniques. Red, salmon pink, sky blue and other shades are used on materials such as printed faux calf skin, pleated velvet, faux fur, silk, jerseys and more. Techniques such as knitted ribbing, silk printing and embroidery are used throughout. Furry Nike Air Force 1s were made specially for the Kye autumn/winter 2017/18 collection.
