Seasonal spring dishes
Rome is a must-visit destination for gourmets at the best of times, and spring welcomes a whole host of new seasonal foods to delight the taste buds. Pizza and pasta dishes are perennially popular all-year round and some of the best flavours can be found in seasonal dishes. Vignarola is one of the most famous spring dishes in Rome and a real must-try. The delicious Italian stew is made with peas, artichokes, fava beans and lettuce, and artichokes and asparagus appear in many Italian dishes from March to May. Those with a penchant for sweet things shouldn’t leave Rome without trying the colomba di Pasqua. The dove-shaped cake is made especially for Easter and is traditionally topped with pearled sugar and almonds – the perfect edible souvenir from Rome.
Casa delle Farfalle butterfly house
Spring represents new life and Casa delle Farfalle, a tropical greenhouse, is one of the best places to honour the new season. From 23 March to 9 June, the greenhouse will be home to hundreds of rare and tropical butterflies. Visitors will be able to admire the butterflies up close as the beautiful insects fly around freely in an environment that mirrors their natural habitat.

Originally established in 1883, when the Corsini family donated the garden to the Italian government, the Orto Botanico - Botanical Garden – is one of Rome’s best-loved green spaces. This spring, the beautiful destination has extended its opening hours to include Sunday, meaning the public now has access every day of the week. The perfect place to while away a warm spring afternoon, the gardens feature over 3,500 species of plants, as well as green houses and a rock garden. If you are in Rome from 12-14 April, be sure to pay a visit to see the blossoming cherry trees in the Japanese tea garden.
