Ikea’s Stockholm collection is one of the mega-home store’s most individual and design-led collections – but that doesn’t mean you have to buy into it completely, replacing all other styles. Stockholm is designed so that even if you only buy one piece, it will fit in perfectly with the existing style in your home.
‘Stockholm is a collection of strong, individual products, which stand out on their own but also work very well together,’ says Viveca Olsson, creative director of the Stockholm collection, in the video below. ‘[It] easily combines with what you already have, whether it be other Ikea furniture, old antiques or modern classics.’
This year’s collection, previewed at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York back in May, is in stores now and features glassware and textiles in playful shapes and bright colours, as well as furniture and accessories in dark walnut and bone china – giving the collection a luxurious yet practical feel.
‘When designing for Stockholm I looked quite a bit at the 50s and 60s in terms of both style and function,’ says Ola Wihlborg, designer for the Stockholm collection. ‘[However] I would describe Stockholm as a timeless collection. Timeless is a good word, it’s a word that reflects the high quality and many of these materials just get more beautiful with age.’
‘The Stockholm collection is like a big Scandinavian family, but with an international perspective,’ adds Wihlborg in the video below. ‘It's a family that resembles each other, especially when standing together, but the pieces have their own, unique personalities.’
