This year’s looking fabulous for iconic British brand Burberry. Having wowed London Fashion Week with an autumn/winter 2012 collection presented under a shower of fake glittery rain, Burberry toasted the launch of its second shop in Amsterdam, one of its biggest in Europe, with a host of celebrities including actress Carice van Houten (Valkyrie) and One Night Only frontman and Burberry model George Craig, who DJd at the event.
It was back in 1856 when Thomas Burberry, a 21-year-old draper’s apprentice, opened a small outfitter’s shop in Basingstoke, England. Burberry invented gabardine and developed the predecessor of the trench coat and the brand earned two royal warrants in the 20th century. Its image and output is now under the stewardship of creative director Christopher Bailey, who joined the company in 2001.
A calm Yorkshireman with an uncanny knack for keeping things simultaneously dignified yet fresh, Bailey has demonstrated that there are few storms this heritage label can’t weather. He has cleverly steered the brand into ever more refined territory (check out this season’s beautiful burnished colour palette and batik-style prints) and forged associations with the brightest of British stars (step forward actor Eddie Redmayne, current star of the Prorsum campaign alongside model Cara Delevingne), ensuring that Burberry’s future looks anything but chequered.
