The designs of Greek jeweller Minas are characterised by classic minimalism. Fluid, architectural lines feature throughout the collections of necklaces, bracelets and rings for women and men, with pieces predominantly in silver and gold.
A highlight of Minas is its very popular Pendant of the Year, produced each new year. Essentially this is a good luck charm created to bring prosperity and positivity to the wearer for the year ahead. The design of each pendant is inspired by the number of the year to come. This coming year it is a lighting bolt – connected to the number 9, from 2019. For each pendant Minas merges art and form in the design.
A talented designer, Minas founded his namesake brand in 1980 in Athens, having trained as a goldsmith and having worked in New York as a jeweller. He included his handwritten signature in limited-edition pieces and today his signature is still featured in each piece, like a logo ‒ it’s an element that sets Minas apart from other jewellery brands. Minas has also worked in furniture design (such as a bench and lamppost in Mykonos), architecture (a house in Mykonos and the club Astra) and has collaborated with Danish jeweller Georg Jensen, Greek porcelain company Ionia and Isetan in Japan, among others.
His work has been exhibited across the world, including Athens with a show at the famous Benaki Museum. The exhibition there was called Clarity of Shapes and was a retrospective of his long career. It showed more than 40 images of his jewellery, with pieces pictured as worn by friends, models and people that have inspired him over the years.
