Lido commands attention with its distinctive modern architecture, industrial glass walls, wood panels and hard clean lines, which contrast with the warm and welcoming interior. Its unique situation is equally intriguing; set in the centre of Düsseldorf’s Media Harbour it can only be reached via a low-lit pedestrian bridge. The food is remarkably traditional in style, simply prepared and based on classic French principles, but given a contemporary twist.

Husband and wife team Julia and Jürgen Fehrenbach have worked together to create a restaurant that is intimate and unpretentious, specialising in fresh German and French fare. Loyal customers frequent the cosy space, attracted by Fehrenbach’s transformation of simple ingredients into gourmet-standard dishes, such as Champagne cabbage, celeriac purée with truffle sauce and a trio of mushroom soups. Also delicious is the grilled lobster and luxury foie gras.

Weinhaus Tante Anna
With an antique-laden dining room, ornately carved dark wood furnishings and sterling-silver polished candlesticks, Weinhaus Tante Anna celebrates the best of traditional German décor. The menu is similarly patriotic and surprisingly contemporary, proving that German cuisine is much more than the stereotypical Sauerkraut. A wealth of hearty meat dishes is on offer alongside delicately balanced appetisers such as a chilled carrot soup sweetened with elderberries. Vegetarians will be pleased to note that a meat-free menu is also available.

An oasis of calm in the bustling city centre, Zin-Zin offers an experience as individual as its name. International influences are evident in every aspect of the restaurant, from its Italian and French-inspired décor to its varied menu which takes in flavours from Mediterranean and Asian cuisine. Some local produce is used, and the combinations are creative, such as Breton lobster and turbot paired with truffle oil and chilli. Comfortable seating, a cool colour scheme and mood lighting complement the relaxed atmosphere.

Brewery restaurant Zum Schlüssel provides home-cooked cuisine along with a selection of fine German beers. The menu changes daily to make the most of seasonal ingredients and is, in general, hearty, rich and filling – the spiced goulash and sweet and sour kidneys are the perfect accompaniment to freshly brewed ale. The brewery influence can be felt especially in the extensive sandwich selection, served on rye bread.
