In the St Pauli quarter.
What’s best about your neighbourhood?
It’s raw and artistic. The Beatles lived here and it was the hub of German punk. Now we’re getting great organic cafés and creative bakeries too.
If money were no object, where would you live?
I would live in the same place but with a bigger studio.
What are your favourite stores in Hamburg?
Herr von Eden’s original store on Marktstrasse 33 is enchanting. Petra Teufel on Hohe Bleichen is a great fashion concept store, stocking clothes by international designers.
What are your favourite restaurants in Hamburg?
Die Bank on Hohe Bleichen for traditional German cuisine. Tarantella restaurant on Stephansplatz, in the opulent Casino Esplanade, is the canteen for fashion models, footballers and local stars.
Any recommendations for local dishes to try?
Aalsuppe, the local eel soup, is actually pretty delicious.
Where do you take out-of-town friends?
Herr Max bakery on Schulterblatt has the best sweets. The film screenings and football-themed events keep it cool and creative.
Where do you like to celebrate?
Landhaus Scherrer on Elbschaussee serves the best high-end traditional German food in a lovely park-like setting. There is also a more casual bistro.
Do you have a favourite walk?
I start at the Reeperbahn when it’s quiet in the morning and I walk along the port to the increasingly pretty and elegant parts of the city.
How do you like to travel around the city?
By bike and boat.
What’s Hamburg’s best city landmark?
The port has some of the richest and most interesting history in Germany.
What do you think is the best museum?
Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe has some of the most challenging and stimulating contemporary art exhibitions in Europe.
Where are the best bargains to be found?
Every Saturday there are real treasures at the Neuer Kamp flea market.
Anywhere you’d recommend visitors avoid?
Anyone travelling as a family, or wanting to avoid loud and annoying tourists, should stay clear of the Reeperbahn.
