The appearance of Marc Jacobs as a judge for Peek & Cloppenburg’s Designer for Tomorrow award during the Mercedes-Benz spring/summer 2012 Fashion Week Berlin generated national excitement. Alongside other esteemed judges such as Vogue editor-in-chief Christiane Arp, WWD critic Melissa Drier and collector Karen Boros, Jacobs voted for the young designer whose promising aesthetic earns a cash reward and a fully sponsored show during next season’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. This season’s winner is Alexandra Kiesel, who showed a cheerful, intelligent, artistic and strong collection of beautifully cut, colourblocked, daywear. Her work was viable, not merely commercial; smart but playful. Kiesel’s cuts were serious and sculptural, with 80s-inspired shoulders and abridged boleros, but her use of primary colors was a playful throw-back to childens' wood toys. The Designer for Tomorrow award is an obvious building block for a great future.
