Jean Paul Gaultier’s latest runway show played homage to 1980s musical legends such as Grace Jones, Madonna, Sade, Boy George, David Bowie, Michael Jackson and Abba, to name just a few. Less a collection than a retrospective, the show transported us back in time to re-experience some of Gaultier’s best work. There were Madonna’s famous black lingerie looks, Bowie’s star-print bodysuits, Abba’s flowing silver flares and Michael Jackson’s drop crotch trousers with signature white socks. Broken down, this collection was definitely wearable, yet in truth that wasn’t the purpose of the show. Jean Paul Gaultier created this collection in tribute to the superstars of the 1980s, and so it should be worn in nothing less than heartfelt homage.
