Karl Lagerfeld is the master of lavish set designs, creating catwalk scenery that is as spectacular as the clothes themselves. On Thursday 3 May, he presented the Chanel Cruise collection at the Grand Palais in Paris. While previous Chanel Cruise collections have included rocket ships and supermarkets, this season was all about a giant cruise liner named La Pausa – a homage to Coco Chanel’s holiday home on the French Riviera. The life-size replica cruise liner, complete with steaming chimneys, was the setting for both the catwalk show and the after-party, and the interior of the stunning two-storey ship featured grand pianos and oyster bars.
The clothing collection was all about travelling in style and included signature Chanel items such as a tweed jacket, which was fastened with La Pausa-stamped buttons and turned into a double-breasted blazer-dress. Sailor tops, stripes and summery pastel hues permeated the collection, while bright whites and sequinned aqua embroideries made this collection one of the most covetable yet. As with Karl Lagerfeld’s other recent collections for Chanel, there were a few novelty-shaped accessories, with spherical handbags, life buoy-inspired necklaces and nautical-striped bracelets and fingerless gloves.
