The Arken museum of modern art has unveiled a display of the artistic oeuvre of Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II, the largest staged to date. The Essence of Colour, which runs until 1 July, follows the queen’s artistic development over the past 35 years and marks her 40th year on the throne of Denmark.
The 135 works of art on show, which were created using acrylics, watercolours and decoupage, display a rich array of colours and artistic techniques. Nature is a central theme, with evocative works inspired by English writer J R R Tolkien, humour conveyed by picturesque landscapes, and the queen’s interest in archaeology reflected in works that feature stone, skeletons and bones.
