As the name suggests, porcelain company Royal Copenhagen stems from royal beginnings. Founded in 1775, the company was run by the Danish royal family for almost a century. The company later took up residence in Amagertorv 6, pictured above, a striking Renaissance building built in 1616 and believed to be one of Copenhagen’s oldest buildings. Royal Copenhagen developed a reputation for its high-quality porcelain and craftsmanship and from the 1950s onwards the company collaborated with modern Danish designers, inviting the likes of Thorkild Olsen and Grethe Meyer to create dinner services; Royal Copenhagen continues to work alongside the country’s leading creatives. Visit the flagship store, also at Amagertorv 6, to soak up the impressive surroundings and to gain an insight into Danish design, both past and present.
