18 05 29 - Global Blue ready to process its first digital Tax Free Shopping transaction in Italy

The news comes as Italy passes new legislation to shift to all-digital Tax Free Shopping system Otello 2.0 on 1 September 2018

In a bid to ease Italian merchants’ transition to Otello 2.0, the mandatory Tax Free Shopping (TFS) system going live on 1 September 2018, Global Blue is today ready to process its first digital TFS transaction.

How does it work?

From the moment the Tax Free Form is issued in store to the validation of goods by customs to the refund confirmation, Otello 2.0 covers the entire TFS system the digital way.

Otello 2.0 consists of two easy processes and the Tax Free Form issuing only takes a few seconds:

  • The in-store issuing process:
    • The sales associate fills in the traveller’s information when issuing the Tax Free Form
    • Customs is sent this data in real time
    • Otello 2.0 checks and forwards the transaction to the tax authorities
    • Once the Tax Free Form is verified, the merchant prints it and gives it to the traveller
  • Validation and refund flow:
    • Upon leaving the EU through an Italian exit point, the traveller validates their Tax Free Form, at either a Global Blue Refund Office, a customs desk or an Otello 2.0 kiosk
    • The Otello 2.0 system checks the transaction’s status
    • Once the transaction has been validated, the traveller can be refunded

What are the benefits?

Complete digitisation of the TFS journey means merchants will have access to all data analytics gathered throughout the process, to help them understand their international clientele’s shopping habits. For customers, digitalisation of the TFS journey is the gateway to faster service and thus increased customer satisfaction. For public authorities, Otello 2.0 will enable better fraud detection and prevention.

At implementation, Global Blue ensures a seamless transition process as 95% of tax free transactions have already been digitised in Italy.
