Since Parson’s School of Design graduate Marc Jacobs and Robert Duffy presented their first catwalk collection in 1986, Marc Jacobs has been favoured by the stylish, urban fashion set. Each season his big production theatrical catwalk shows are some of the industry’s most influential and have gained Jacobs celebrity clients that include Kate Moss, Sofia Coppola and Victoria Beckham.
His designs are known for surprising people, incorporating dramatic changes in mood and silhouette choice each season but often incorporating his signature touches such as polka dots, exposed zippers, unfinished hems, oversized snaps and buttons. In 2001, Jacobs introduced diffusion line Marc by Marc Jacobs; alongside his two ready-to-wear collections, Jacobs now also produces shoes, handbags, small leather goods, sunglasses, watches, swimwear and a line of fragrances.
Marc Jacobs has been the recipient of a number of awards throughout his career; in January 2010 he was presented the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by France’s Minister of Culture, in May he was crowned the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year and in 2011 he was honoured with the CFDA’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Today, Jacobs and Duffy still work to maintain their company’s original principles: being driven by a love of fashion, making use of high quality materials and demonstrating a commitment to charitable projects and collaborations.
