City Guide
Katie Ramsingh,

Shopping in Montevideo is a much more relaxing experience than in many of world’s other major cities. You might not see throngs of people crowding the shopping streets of Uruguay’s capital, yet alongside local businesses and traditional markets you will find all your favourite sportswear and luxury brands. This more laid-back approach to shopping is something many visitors to Montevideo find refreshing and it allows them time to explore the major malls as well as smaller flea markets. In this guide we take you to four must-visit shopping locations in the city.

Punta Carretas Shopping
This large building was a prison until 1986. After it closed, Argentine architect Juan Carlos López transformed it into a modern shopping centre, and since 1994 it has been home to nearly 200 stores. Today you’ll find international brands such as Lacoste, Adidas and Mac here as well as a cinema.

Mercado del Puerto
When visiting the Pérez Castellanos district, ask locals the way to the meat market. They’ll direct you to Montevideo’s old port market building which has an array of Uruguayan steak restaurants, known as parrillas. Head past these smoky stalls and at the back of the market you’ll find a treasure trove of local handicrafts that make great souvenirs.

Montevideo Shopping
Montevideo’s oldest and largest mall, this shopping hub receives more than 1,400,000 visitors a month. In addition to its wide choice of international fashion stores, Montevideo Shopping is also the biggest entertainment complex in Uruguay, with 10 cinema screens, two theatres and a casino.

Nuevocentro Shopping
Opened in 2013, Nuevocentro Shopping is Montevideo’s newest mall. It offers an array of fashion and sports stores and also has a food court, a huge supermarket, a cinema complex and a cartoon network-themed children’s amusement park. If you’re looking for somewhere to while away a day this is definitely the place to be.
