Sufiyeh Hadian-Clarke,

Holding a reputation as a playground for the elite, Punta del Este was discovered by wealthy Argentine and Uruguayan visitors in the early 20th century. Today, European and American travellers alike are beginning to discover the gorgeous beaches, members’ clubs and, of course, fabulous shopping that Punta del Este has to offer

Stay at Serena, an adults-only boutique hotel located close to the centre of Punta del Este. The best parts of this ocean-front hotel include the beach areas and swimming pool, where guests can relax on the deck around the infinity pool.

Beach hop along Punta del Este’s gorgeous white sand beaches, from the surfer-filled Playa Montoya and family-friendly Playa Mansa to the bohemian resort of José Ignacio and everywhere in between. Everyone can find their ideal stretch of sand and sea here.

Visit the area’s shopping district, where stores such as Armani and Ralph Lauren take pride of place alongside casinos and luxury interior boutiques.

Visit the Casapueblo workshop and museum for a break from the sun and sand. This building, described as a living sculpture, was designed by renowned local artist Carlos Páez Vilaró and features works by the artist including paintings and sculptures. Head to the museum’s terrace at sunset to experience the Ceremony of the Sun, featuring a recording of Vilaró reading a poem dedicated to the sun to bid it farewell.

Dine at La Bourgogne, one of Punta del Este’s leading restaurants. The French menu features appetisers such as foie gras and grilled langoustines alongside main course dishes including rabbit with Uruguayan caviar, grilled fillet steak and lobster. La Bourgogne is also the only restaurant in Uruguay to be a member of Relais & Chateaux, an international collection of luxury restaurants which also includesRestaurant Guy Savoy in Paris and the French Laundry in California. Sit in the jasmine-scented garden for a full sensory experience.
