In store with Paul Smith

Paul Smith reminisces about the opening of his first store in Covent Garden back in 1979

Dominique Fenn ,

Paul Smith’s fashion and design empire is synonymous with quintessential British style and tailoring. Each store is a delightful treasure trove and each is different – yet all are unmistakably Paul Smith. The man behind the brand tells us about his Floral Street store in London.

‘My first shop on Floral Street, number 44, opened in 1979. The Floral Street shop is still one of my favourite shops of my own in the world,’ muses Sir Paul. ‘This was probably the first minimal shop in the whole of Europe at the time, pre-dating the influx of Japanese designer brands in the early 1980s. When number 43 Floral Street became available I decided to take it! I tried to keep the character of the building, with the beautiful old floorboards and the brick walls, which was completely opposite to how the shop was when I bought it. I was nervous that it wouldn’t be accepted by my modern young customers but it proved very successful. It’s full of character.’
