Sky-high dining has never been so popular. And where better to experience unforgettable views as the backdrop to a delectable meal than in one of London’s tallest buildings – the Shard?
Set on the 32nd floor, Oblix has two dining rooms and a slick, contemporary bar called Bar at East, which offers innovative cocktails and ideal amuse-bouches. Kiss the Rainbow, a light and fruity mixture of gin, pink grapefruit, Aperol, raspberry, lime and peach bitters, is a winning choice, as is the King of New York, with its rich combination of sweet vermouth, chocolate bitters, bourbon, hibiscus and cinnamon. Once you’ve wetted your whistle, you could opt for relaxed dining and take a seat in the informal Oblix East restaurant with striking City views. For lighter fare, stay at Bar at East and enjoy its vibe-filled soundtrack while choosing a snack from the bar bites menu; dishes range from barbecue pulled pork brioche rolls to croque monsieur and truffle macaroni and cheese.
To sample the best of the full Oblix menu in refined surroundings, book a table at Oblix West. The predominantly grill-based menu showcases the talents of founder Rainer Becker, with impeccably cooked, high-quality meat and a clever combination of international flavours. Starters are made for sharing, with highlights including truffle flatbread, soft shell crab with chilli mayonnaise, and seared wagyu beef. Lighter appetites are well served by the selection of salads, lobster and scallop ceviche and the exceptionally creamy burrata.
For the main course, go bold with whole duck or suckling pig and gremolata ‒ both from the rotisserie oven and devised for two to share ‒ or choose grilled Dover sole, whole lobster or barbecued black cod if you’re watching your waistline. Rib-eye and sirloin steaks, and lamb, veal and pork chops, each with their own accompaniments, round out the meatier side of the menu, with pasta and grilled aubergine options for vegetarians.
Complementary sides, including green beans with pancetta and truffled ricotta, and new potatoes with citrus dressing and soft herbs, provide balance to the hero dishes. But do make sure you save space for dessert. The pecan nut and chocolate bar with crunchy bourbon ice-cream and the New York cheesecake, among others, are just the right size to leave you feeling comforted and not over full.
End your meal with a coffee or a digestif as you admire the twinkling beauty of London below.
