Taking afternoon tea is a quintessential British pastime and a must-try on your visit to London. The traditional meal can be enjoyed at some of the capital’s top hotels, restaurants and bars, which all offer their own versions.

This autumn, Hotel Café Royal has collaborated with leading French perfume brand Diptyque to create an afternoon tea inspired by a selection of its most popular scents. Served in the gilded splendour of the hotel’s Oscar Wilde Bar, the tea is one of the finest and most indulgent in London.

The traditional afternoon tea has been subtly reworked in conjunction with Diptyque. Executive pastry chef Sarah Barber has cleverly infused a range of cakes with ingredients based on four of the fragrance brand’s signature scents. The classic Victoria sponge has been given a romantic twist with raspberry and rose jam and a lychee and rose mousse topped with silver leaf and crystallised rose petals. Other mouthwatering offerings include violet and cassis tart, lemon verbena cream on a sablé Breton base, and the stunning Tahitian Vanilla Bar made with vanilla sponge topped with hazelnut praline feuilletine.

Standout sandwich options include Cotswold chicken with lemon verbena and the traditional roast Aberdeen Angus beef, watercress and horseradish, which continues to be a highlight of the menu.

Guests will also receive a gift to take home: a Diptyque Baies candle, with notes of Bulgarian rose and blackcurrant – the perfect autumnal scent.

The Diptyque afternoon tea at Hotel Café Royal, which is available until 15 November, is priced at £60 per person (£42 without the gift), or £65 with a glass of Laurent-Perrier NV champagne.
