London has a wide range of great coffee and breakfast options, and the newly launched Covent Garden Grind is giving some of the more established early-bird spots a run for their money. The Maiden Lane site is the most recent launch from Grind, a café and cocktail chain which already has locations in Shoreditch, Holborn, Royal Exchange and London Bridge. The Covent Garden coffee, juice and smoothie bar is well placed for visitors to make the most of the area’s plethora of boutiques and attractions.
Visiting for breakfast, brunch or a light lunch is highly recommended. The green smoothie bowl, a fabulously fresh blend of spinach, kiwi, yoghurt and goji berries, is a delicious, filling and virtuous way to begin the day. For colder mornings, a hearty bowl of porridge made with coconut milk, berries, chia and quinoa is an excellent choice, while those with more savoury tastes can tuck into a variety of egg-based dishes such as an inventive combination of pickled asparagus, roasted tomato, fennel, rocket and eggs rolled in kaniwa (similar to quinoa).
Late risers can take advantage of the lunch menu, which is available from midday. Highlights include the sourdough club sandwich filled with prosciutto, chicken, aioli and scamorza cheese, while vegans and vegetarians are well catered for with dishes such as the rye tofu sandwich stacked with tofu, beetroot, avocado and soya dressing.
