Sally McIlhone,

A modern wine bar that also offers a tempting menu of contemporary European cuisine, 28˚-50˚ Wine Workshop & Kitchen has three enticing and conveniently located branches across London. The Maddox Street site in the heart of Mayfair is a perfect spot to stop for a glass of wine and a bite to eat after a day of retail therapy on Regent Street.

The two-floor venue seats 50, and on the lower level guests can observe the hardworking chefs as they create impeccable dishes in an open kitchen. The culinary offerings, devised by executive chef Justin Leclair and Michelin-starred owner Agnar Sverrisson, known as Aggi, change with the seasons but might include delectable grilled prawns with aioli or smoked salmon with horseradish yoghurt and rye bread to start, followed by 28-day aged Scottish rib-eye steak or Iberico pork jowl for the main course. Desserts range from baked blueberry cheesecake to pistachio parfait, both of which round out the hearty meal with a flourish. Those wanting a lighter bite could throw back a Maldon rock oyster or two. The charcuterie selection and the seafood platters offer a stunning array of treats and there is a delicious yet affordable set menu available to early diners.

With a name that reflects the latitudes within which most of the world’s vineyards are located, it almost goes without saying that 28˚-50˚ Wine Workshop & Kitchen has a wine list that truly shines. The Maddox Street branch boasts a diverse selection that incorporates well-known bottles of red and white along with a few more unusual choices for those who relish the opportunity to sup something new, and it is also home to a champagne bar. If you’re looking to start your meal with the pinnacle of aperitifs, choose a glass from the 25 sparkling varieties on offer. For the connoisseur, there is also a collector’s list of elite vintages that are particularly rare and hard to find elsewhere in the city. For a special occasion, a bottle from this menu will certainly not disappoint.

Whether you book a spot at one of the wine-tasting events or themed dinners here, or simply pop in after a spot of retail therapy, a visit to 28˚-50˚ Wine Workshop & Kitchen Maddox Street, or one of its sister branches, is a reliable choice for the discerning barfly.
