10 questions with Imarni Nails

Imarni Nails is one of today’s most in-demand nail art brands, with a host of celebrity clients, a nail salon in trendy Shoreditch shopping centre Boxpark and an Instagram page full of #nailinspiration. Founder Imarni Ashman discusses her love of London, nail art and celebrity clients with Global Blue’s Kirsty Welsh

Kirsty Welsh
Kirsty Welsh,

What do you like most about your neighbourhood?
I am a proud Londoner and love the cultural diversity along with the individual artistic aspects that you see all around you. Shoreditch in particular, where my salon is based, has a very special atmosphere.

How did you get into nails?
Straight after school I studied as a beautician at college and quickly realised nails were my thing. This was around the time that nail art was very up-and-coming. I put in a lot of ground work, learning my trade until I started getting involved with the fashion industry and the rest is history.

What are your inspirations?
My inspiration is fashion – the catwalk, mood boards, what happens behind the scenes, as well as the people and stylists.

Which big events have you been part of?
I have been so lucky to have been a part of many amazing events, such as V Festival, and to have worked with clients including Moschino and singer-songwriters FKA Twigs and Lily Allen.

What are your nail must-haves?
Gel nail art, as it can last for up to four weeks and does not chip.

What is your all-time favourite nail design?
My all-time favourite nails were some I did for Dazed magazine – they were long, green and had piercings!

Are there any celebrities or brands you would like to collaborate with?
My favourite brand, and one I would love to work with more, is Chanel. The celebrity I would love to do nail art for is Rihanna.

What are the key nail art trends for SS16?
Colour and design. The key nail art trends for SS16 in my opinion will be bright coloured tips.

Do you have any favourite London haunts, eateries or shops?
I really enjoy hanging out, eating or shopping in East London. I love Brick Lane and in particular the food market that’s there on a Sunday.

Describe your style and you favourite wardrobe staples:
My style is just comfortable jeans and trainers. I’m tall so I don’t tend to wear heels a lot!

Describe your nail design style in three words?
Grown-up nail art.

What made you choose Boxpark as the location for your salon?
This was a no-brainer and I was so lucky that Boxpark could accommodate my salon. Everything about it is perfect including the location, fashion and style culture, transport links and local celebrities!

What’s next for Imarni Nails?
2015 was an amazingly busy year for me and my wonderful team – Marissa, Keisha, Sarah, Sophie and Pria have all been part the growth and experience and are enjoying it daily. We have been balancing the salon with fashion shoots and events, trailblazing together! For now, at Imarni Nails, we will keep doing what we’re doing!
