Enjoy laid-back luxury at The Greyhound on the Test

Offering a slice of laid-back luxury less than an hour from London, The Greyhound on the Test is the ideal country retreat

Verity Hogan
Verity Hogan,

Set on a quintessentially English high street lined with country outfitters and pretty teashops, The Greyhound on the Test offers the perfect antidote to the demands of London life. The hotel is located less than an hour from the capital but is a world away in terms of its laid-back atmosphere. The seven individually decorated bedrooms have flat-screen televisions, tea and coffee making facilities and luxurious bathrooms equipped with locally produced lavender bath products.

The Greyhound’s food is highly acclaimed. The menu is well edited and based on high-quality British produce which is simply prepared to bring out ingredients’ natural flavours. Try the fresh tomato salad topped with basil and baby mozzarella, or dive into the half pint of prawns served with deliciously tangy garlic mayonnaise. Leave room for dessert; the lemon cheesecake with white chocolate and strawberry honeycomb is highly recommended.

After dinner, guests can retreat to the hotel’s comfortable yet stylish bedrooms. Room décor with neutral colour palettes is soothingly restrained, while works by local artists provide colour. Guests are sure to sleep soundly; the beds are designed for comfort and the quiet countryside location ensures an undisturbed night.

Breakfast is well worth waking up to. A selection of cereals, fruits and juices is available but don’t miss out on the cooked options; the full English includes enticing sausage and bacon as well as particularly delicious tomato while simpler options such as scrambled egg on toast are executed perfectly.

Guests will feel at home throughout their stay thanks to the friendly yet unobtrusive service. Spend your days pursuing activities in the surrounding countryside – the area is one of the country’s best fishing spots – or strolling around Stockbridge’s boutiques before returning to the welcoming luxury at The Greyhound.

This October, the hotel is hosting two exclusive wine evenings. Discover the finest Tuscan wines over dinner with Leon Fembert of the renowned Italian estate Nittardi on Friday 24 October or taste the best of California with Maria Sinskey alongside a Champagne reception and jazz performance on Friday 31.
