Souvenir: Dervish coffee cup by Kunter Sekercioglu

Vanessa H. Larson ,

In Turkey, serving coffee is a carefully orchestrated ritual, an occasion that calls for a host’s best tableware. Istanbul-based designer Kunter Şekercioğlu has reinterpreted the traditional demitasse and matching saucer used for serving the brew with a contemporary aesthetic that is both minimalist and authentic. His Dervish coffee cup evokes the swirling robes and fluid movements of the whirling dervishes, a Turkish order of Sufi mystics who believe trance-like spinning will bring them closer to God. Thanks to the product’s sleek, functional design, coffee drinkers may feel just as carried away as the dervishes themselves.
