Çeşm-i bülbül, or ‘nightingale’s eye’, is a unique Ottoman style of glassware in which coloured glass rods are set into a background of clear glass and twisted into beautiful spiral patterns. Turkish design brand Hiref is one of just a few companies in Istanbul still producing this glassware, which is hand-blown by artisans skilled in the method. By marrying this technique with the form of a Turkish architectural ornament called an alem (the finial found on a dome or minaret), Hiref has created decorative objects that are at once deeply traditional and utterly original.
