Raising the bar

For panoramic views, space and style, Istanbul’s bars are hard to beat. Verity Hogan recommends a handful of the best

Verity Hogan,

Otto Sofyalı
Otto Sofyalı’s winning combination of great music, good food and potent cocktails attracts an eclectic mix of trendy locals, expats and bohemian patrons. The third branch of the Otto chain opened on popular Sofyalı Sokak in 2008 and now caters for up to 60 guests. At the weekend, local and international DJs take over the decks.

Ulus 29
You may spot a celebrity or two at Ulus 29. DJs flock from all over the world to play in the club room until the early hours. Visitors who were first attracted by the buzz will return for the efficient service and spectacular views across the Bosphorus. Maintain your stamina with the delicious finger food.

360Istanbul East
Opened in July, 360Istanbul East commands postcard-perfect views of the city: its two-tiered terrace, designed by architect Ufuk Alparslan, overlooks the rooftops of Kadıköy, the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. The indoor restaurant and bar host weekend club events and offer an extensive cocktail menu, which features classic concoctions that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are delicious.

Angelique’s three dance floors offer music to suit even the most discerning listeners. This waterside club-restaurant in the popular neighbourhood of Ortaköy is an excellent choice for a celebration. Revellers may find themselves distracted by the panoramic vistas over the Bosphorus, which are enhanced by the venue’s large windows and mirrored interior.

Taking its name from its street address, 67 belongs to the recently renovated Nu Pera complex and has kept a youthful clientele with its well-balanced cocktail list and bar menu; the starter platters work particularly well when shared between friends. The casual, lounge bar ambience and invitingly comfortable sofas actively promote relaxation.
