Istanbul’s Kanyon shopping mall

Since the 1980s Istanbul’s residents have embraced the idea of indoor shopping centres and now nearly every neighbourhood in the city has one. Here’s our guide to Kanyon, which is located in Levent, Istanbul’s financial district, and is a popular place for the city’s residents to relax after work

Sally Ashley-Cound,

Levent, on the western shore of the Bosphorus strait, is Istanbul’s financial district and the home of the Kanyon shopping mall. Kanyon, a cool and breezy semi-outdoor alternative to the city’s indoor shopping centres, opened in 2006 and its dramatic, award-winning design is reminiscent of the curve and depth of a canyon.

At Kanyon shoppers can make the most of over 150 stores, including Istanbul branches of British stores Harvey Nichols and Marks & Spencer, international brands such as Swarovski, Mango and Villeroy & Boch and Turkish staples Vakko, Beymen Club and Paşabahçe.

As well as plenty of shops, there is also a cinema at Kanyon and many gourmet restaurants and cafes, all sited along four covered levels which blend open-air shopping with the comfort of an indoor environment.

Many of the brands at Kanyon were seen for the first time in Istanbul at this shopping centre, including the Wagamama noodle bar, the Douglas parfumerie, the Apple Store and French-inspired café Le Pain Quotidien.
