Atıl Kutoglu: My Istanbul

Atıl Kutoğlu, designer of rich, exotic women’s clothing, shares his top spots in Istanbul with Vanessa H. Larson

City Guide
Vanessa H. Larson,

Where were you born?

Where do you live now?
Vienna and Istanbul. In Istanbul I live in Tarabya.

What do you like about Tarabya?
I like the Bosphorus. I live on a hill and I have a nice view.

What are your favourite Istanbul stores?
by Beymen, for clothing because they are across from my store and carry cool labels. I love the antique shops in Çukurcuma for old furniture and the bookstores in Beyoğlu.

Do you have a favourite local café?
Little cafes in Yeniköy; my favourite is Tribeca.

Favourite restaurants?
Beymen Brasserie, Den and Biber in Nişantaşı, Paper Moon for Italian food, Lucca and Lulu’s in Bebek for fun.

Where do you take visiting friends?
To restaurants in Bebek, to Hôtel Les Ottomans and to the bar at Swissôtel’s Gaja Restaurant, especially in summertime.

Where do you go to celebrate?
Al Jamal or White Mill. I also like Reina.

Whom in Istanbul do you admire most?
I admire Turkish pop stars like Tarkan and Ajda Pekkan!

Do you have any advice for visitors?
They should combine the ancient with the contemporary. They should go to Kanyon Shopping Mall to see the architecture and, of course, do the museums and the palaces as well. I think Istanbul is about combining yesterday and now.

Do you have any secret spots in Istanbul?
Nothing is so secret in Istanbul, but I go to Tahtakale, around the Covered Bazaar, for inspiration, looking for beads, pearls and authentic fabrics. I also have some secret corners in the Grand Bazaar where I shop for old motifs and fabrics. But I won’t name any specific shops, because then they will be on the Paris and New York catwalks next season!
