Baselworld returns for 2017 with a host of new watches, timepieces and fine jewellery from the world’s most famous brands. Here we show you what to look out for this season, from the latest watch trends to top-secret creations and the hottest designer brand spaces to photograph and post on Instagram.
1. Baselworld celebrates 100 years
2017 marks a milestone in the history of Baselworld, as one of the world’s most popular luxury timepiece events celebrates its 100th anniversary. Each year, more than 100,000 guests pass through its doors to explore watches and jewellery from more than 1,500 leading brands. This year is expected to be one the best yet, with rumours of exciting top-secret launches from brands such as Omega and Rolex.
2. The home of innovative design
Individual brand spaces are just as popular and Instagrammable as the latest watch collections themselves. Each year, luxury timepiece labels unveil their collections amid bespoke branding and glamorous decoration. Previous highlights include Swarovski’s sparkling doughnut-shaped gemstone space in 2014 and Bulgari’s 2013 Serpenti snake-shaped unit.
3. The latest in wearable tech
2017 is rumoured to be a key year for innovative wearable tech, a trend that began with the launch of the groundbreaking Apple Watch in 2015. Major brands are set to expand on their Android-powered smartwatch offerings for modern lifestyles, with data syncing and calendar editing on the go as the main priorities. Rumours are circulating that Swarovski will be debuting a luxury smartwatch at Baselworld this year, so watch this space.
4. Indulge in designer fashion brands
Many luxury fashion houses also specialise in timepieces and Baselworld is the perfect place to discover their latest styles. Burberry made its timepiece debut in 2013, while 2014 marked Chanel’s 10th year at Baselworld. This year, Fendi introduces fashionable wrist straps for ladies, and Chanel celebrates 30 years since the launch of its Première watch collection with the new Première Camélia Skeleton model, designed entirely in Paris.
5. Catch the latest trends
Popular watch trends emerge each year at Baselworld. Throughout the pre-Baselworld build-up this year, key trends for 2017 included oversized dynamic sports watches, classic minimalism, a focus on ladies watches and a modern new double strap design, bringing a fashionable edge to luxury watches. The new Maurice Lacroix Aikon watch for women, available in two sizes, is a modern classic. The high-precision quartz timepiece features mother-of-pearl detailing, a date display and eight hour-index diamonds, with Roman numerals denoting the other hours in rich gold – a luxury piece for any modern woman.
