The history of H&M

Known today for its trend-led collections and high-end fashion collaborations, H&M has been creating clothing since 1947 and has a rich heritage

Gemma Latham,

It is one of Sweden’s most successful fashion brands, known today for its trend-led young fashions and sell-out designer collaborations, but H&M’s history dates back further than you may think. The clothing company opened in 1947 with a womenswear store in the town of Västerås, just outside Stockholm.

Originally called Hennes, the company’s name was changed to Hennes & Mauritz in 1968, when the hunting and fishing equipment store Mauritz Widforss was acquired; clothing lines for men and children were introduced in the same year. In 1974 the brand was listed on the Stockholm stock exchange and its name was abbreviated to H&M, as we know it today. Since then, the company has grown into a global brand with more than 3,500 stores delivering the hottest fashion trends around the world.
