Gran Vía: City Guide

Over a hundred years ago, Gran Vía was built as Madrid’s answer to New York’s Broadway and Fifth Avenue. With magnificent architecture, luxury shops and theatres, it was a playground for wealthy Madrilenos and Hollywood stars. In 2011 Gran Vía is still the city’s buzzing enertainment hub. This long street runs from Calle de Alcalá to Plaza de España and is home to fantastic shopping, restaurants, bars, cinema and theatre.

The Madrid-París building at Gran Vía 32 originally opened as a department store in 1924. Now it is home to some great high street brands such as Lefties, Mango and H&M.

If you are a fan of Loewe make a pilgrimage to Gran Vía 8, the original Loewe store, which opened in 1939. The store was designed by Francisco Ferrer Bartolomé, whose spectacular chandeliers remain the store’s trademark today. Check out its guestbook inscriptions from aristocrats and film stars such as Grace Kelly.

A trip to Gran Vía would not be complete without a show. Head to one of the many historical venues, such as Teatro Compac Gran Vía, to indulge your senses.

After a hard day following in the footsteps of film stars and artists, relax with a sundowner in the Air Lounge on the stunning rooftop terrace of Hotel de las Letras.  Watch the sun set and enjoy the spectacular views of the bustling city below.
