Katie Ramsingh,

Koreans love to eat fried chicken and it is one of the country’s favourite snacks. Also known as chikin, the speciality is fried twice to give it a crisp coating that holds less grease than other versions. The best Korean fried chicken restaurants in Seoul are not confined to one area and our selection of top chicken eateries encompasses the whole of the city, from Gangnam-gu to Jongno-gu. If you want to try this delicious delicacy during your stay in Seoul, our guide brings you four of the must-visit restaurants that should be on your radar, from the hugely popular Hanchu to Banpo Chicken, one of the oldest fried chicken specialists in Korea.

Formerly known as Cheers, this fried chicken spot in Jongno-gu may have a new name but its fried chicken recipes have luckily stayed the same. This super-popular eatery attracts locals and visitors alike, and has been offering up delicious tender chicken dishes for over 25 years. Owner Park Seon-ok sources the chicken locally and the meat is always fresh and succulent.

Banpo Chicken
Opened in 1976, Banpo Chicken has been at the forefront of Korean fried chicken cuisine for over 40 years. Customers return time after time for its classic fried chicken dishes, and the restaurant is also credited with inventing Korean-style barbecue chicken. The eatery uses a special sauce for the coating and the chicken here has a strong, unique taste.

Many were worried Hanchu would become inundated with visitors after it was featured as one of Seoul’s top chicken spots on a Korean TV food show. Luckily the fried chicken spot has kept its local charm while serving more customers now than ever before. The house speciality is gochu chicken – fried chicken with chilli pepper – and is the perfect complement to a pint of Korean beer.

Mirak Chicken
The most popular dish at this fried chicken restaurant is its garlic pan chicken, which consists of an entire fried chicken smothered in garlic and served on a hot iron pan. If you plan on dining here be sure to leave plenty of time as there are often large queues or, instead, you could choose to make use of the takeaway service.
