Chris Lee: My Singapore

Gwyneth Holland ,

If money and work were no object, where would you prefer to live?
Tokyo.

What is your favourite store in Singapore, other than your own?
Strangelets design store on Amoy Street.

Favourite café, restaurant and bar?
Laurent's Café and Chocolate Bar on Robertson Quay, Japanese restaurant Si Bon, in a tiny converted chapel in Sentosa, and Klee cocktail bar on Portsdown Road.

Favourite neighbourhood?
Ann Siang Road, where the Asylum shop is. Ann Siang used to be by the river so all the buildings are godowns and associations of different dialect groups from China. The fact that new bars, restaurants and retail shops can co-exist with these make this place interesting.

Favourite tourist attraction?
Dempsey  – now a shopping and restaurant destination, it used to be a British military base so all the barracks are scattered in foliage. To be sipping a lychee martini and looking out into the forest makes it a surreal environment.

Any recommendations for foods to try?
Frog porridge in the traditional Geylang district.

What can’t you live without?
My laptop. Any advice for visitors to Singapore? Don’t be a tourist, be a traveller. Go to Geylang, Little India, Dempsey, all the heartland neighbourhoods.
