Changing spaces

David Lee discovers the disused spaces being transformed into Singapore's hottest retail, leisure and entertainment venues

City Guide
David Lee,

White Rabbit
The uber-chic White Rabbit restaurant evokes Alice's adventures in Wonderland. It is housed in an abandoned church formerly surrounded by wilderness. The designers carefully updated the chapel's old-world character, placing custom-made contemporary furniture and lighting alongside local antiques and original features such as the stained-glass windows and wrought-iron window grilles. The food and drink served within echo the combination of modern and heritage décor. Classic bistro dishes such as steak tartare, mac and cheese and lobster thermidor get a makeover, and cocktail classics such as the mojito, gin fizz and bloody Mary have also been renovated at the hands of expert mixologists. Enjoy the simple grandeur of the chapel space and the outdoor Rabbit Hole bar, set in playfully sculpted gardens.

Dempsey Hill
A favourite relaxation destination for Singaporeans and visitors alike, Dempsey brims with history. Converted from a former British Army barracks on the edge of a tropical forest, Dempsey is a unique place to escape the bustle of the city and restaurants and bars abound here. Singapore classics include the famous Samy's Curry restaurant and the iconic Long Beach seafood restaurant. There are also newcomers, such as the Tippling Club, where guests can match their dinner to their drinks, the RedDot microbrewery, and the Angel's Share wine bar, where over 700 wines are available.

Dempsey House
Three-storey Dempsey House aims to be a relaxing home from home. Unwind here with spa treatments, Jacuzzis and the yoga studio and library, or head to the Apothecary Bar or Barracks Café for a cosy lunch.

Old School
Housed in the Methodist Girls' School building on Mount Sophia, this super-cool complex combines art and entertainment in one distinctive building. Galleries, studios, restaurants and bars populate the former classrooms, including a 136-seat luxury cinema showing the best in local and international film-making, and the 2902 photography gallery, the largest of its kind in south-east Asia. Check out the Chalk bistro in the former science lab for laid-back lunches and dinners, or go to the Timbre bar for live music and DJ sets.
