The costumes created by Miuccia Prada and Catherine Martin for Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel The Great Gatsby are currently making their way from Prada’s Epicenter New York store on Broadway to the Prada Tokyo Epicenter store, where they will go on show from 14 June to 30 June 2013.
The exhibition is as spectacular as the film itself, with flapper dresses made from brilliant, iridescent metallic lamé, sequins, silk taffeta, dyed fur and velvet, styled with fantastical hats, shoes and accessories. Design sketches, production stills, backstage footage and film trailers are also on show.
The garments echo authentic 20s style and were created following strict guidelines on colour, material and fabric set out by Academy Award- and Tony-winning costume designer and art director Catherine Martin, who also created the costumes for Luhrmann’s other blockbuster movies Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!. Miuccia Prada looked to her design house’s archives for inspiration.
Visitors to the exhibition will get a feel for the personality and individual styles of many of the characters in the film, including Daisy Buchanan, played by Carey Mulligan, and Myrtle Wilson, played by Isla Fisher, as well as seeing many of the costumes which added to the opulent, extravagant atmosphere of the parties hosted by Jay Gatsby, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.
