In contrast to the euphoric brights seen at last week’s London Fashion Week, Frida Giannini at Gucci turned towards the Gothic with a dark, serious collection of inky tones and covered-up silhouettes. Dense fabrics featured heavily; velvet, brocade and chunky knitwear were occasionally lightened with lace panelling, while shapes combined the high necklines and frills of Edwardian England with equestrian style, seen in the flat riding boots, leather gloves and structured jackets. The collection had lighter moments; a suit of tarnished metal was partnered with a violet undershirt, while deep yellow florals crept onto chiffon skirts. The finale saw barely there gowns with flowing, sheer panels adorned with sparkling floral embellishments in purple and gunmetal blue.
