The history of Paul & Shark

Originally inspired by sportswear and a passion for the sea, Paul & Shark has been creating quality clothing for 40 years

Established in 1975, Paul & Shark was inspired by sportswear and by the passion and love of the sea that was so important to its founder, Paolo Dini. In the 1950s, the Dini family reopened a knitting mill in Varese. Originally opened in the 1920s, the mill had produced high-quality knitwear and, in the hands of its new owners, became prestigious once again. Many respected names in the emerging French and Italian luxury ready-to-wear industry turned to the Dini family to produce their collections.

Growing up surrounded by a passion for fine craftsmanship and apparel, Paolo Dini was well placed to launch Paul & Shark in 1975. The exclusive new line was named in honour of an 18th-century sailing ship that caught his eye.

To this day, Paul & Shark lives by three quintessentially Italian values: quality, technology and creativity. The brand attributes much of its success to these elements and Paul & Shark collections are now available in over 70 countries. Selling menswear, womenswear, childrenswear and accessories, Paul & Shark creates sportswear, smart casual and luxury lines, combining technical details and fabrics with more fashion-forward design features.

From start to finish, every element of each Paul & Shark piece is made in Italy, with much of the work still carried out at Dama Spa, the family mill.
