Founded in 1851 in Schönenwerd, Switzerland, Bally is synonymous with excellently crafted shoes, made with the best leathers and latest technologies. The brand’s recent relaunch has kept the focus firmly on quality, confirmed by, for example, the reintroduction of the Scribe, the classic men’s handmade shoe created by Max Bally, grandson of founder Carl Franz Bally. The Scribe is available to order, and customers can request a personalised version in the material and colour of their choice. Leather outerwear and handbags are also among the brand’s new strong points and the Bally boutique on Via Montenapoleone is a must-visit for those who love leather.

The vision of Giovanni Fontana, the founder of Valextra, was to create ‘a story of taste beyond fashion’. He achieved his goal; Valextra is today the epitome of Milanese chic. Fontana opened the first Valextra shop in Piazza San Babila in 1937. At the time, the square was a centre of Italian elegance with customers such as Maria Callas and Grace Kelly frequently visiting the store to place personal orders. Today Valextra is found in a different location, on Via Manzoni, and is distributed worldwide, but represents the same sense of excellence – and never abandons its trademark minimal, essential design.
