Chanel marks 60 years of the 2.55 handbag

Chanel’s luxury quilted 2.55 handbag takes centre stage for its 60th anniversary at the Tassenmuseum Hendrikje in Amsterdam

Marina Nelson ,

Chanel’s 2.55 bag is one of the most popular and sought-after bags in the world. To mark its 60th anniversary, the Tassenmuseum Hendrikje – Museum of Bags and Purses – in Amsterdam is hosting Happy Birthday Chanel, an exhibition dedicated to the bag, its history and its influence on fashion over the years.

Open until 3 May, the exhibition explores the inspiration behind Coco Chanel’s design and takes a closer look at seasonal colour blends and special-edition models created by Karl Lagerfeld.

The bag has a huge celebrity following and visitors can browse the museum’s archive of images showing A-list stars with their versions. Famous faces range from 1960s icons Jackie Kennedy and Brigitte Bardot to child stars-turned-fashion designers the Olsen twins.
