City Guide
Hannah Lewis,

Discover a winter wonderland
Germany is famous for its festive markets and the Weihnachtsmarkt – Christmas market – in front of Cologne cathedral is a must-visit for anyone in the city over the festive period. It is the biggest winter market in the city, and its many stalls offer everything from Christmas-themed ornaments and locally made souvenirs to the best in regional food specialities to warm you up then and there or take home to enjoy.

The market is open from 23 November to 23 December, with special events throughout the month, and there is always something new to see, whatever your age or interests.

Escape the elements
When the cold sets in and the daylight hours are fewer, a bit of retail therapy is just what the doctor ordered. Cologne has some of the coolest concept stores around, and these three are some of our favourites.

Department concept store Apropos, located in the centre of Cologne, combines imagination and tradition to offer luxury products of your heart’s desire. Its values have remained the same since founders Klaus Ritzenhöfer and Daniel Riedo opened their first store in 1984. Each season, it presents the latest designs from international fashion houses as well as beauty products and interior design pieces. Gabbana, Tom Ford and Saint Laurent.

Super Store
In February 2015, Super Store boutique relocated to new, larger premises. The brainchild of entrepreneur and blogger Lena Terlutter, Super Store has become the concept store of choice for the city’s fashion fans and, indeed, with visitors in the know.

Monsieur Courbet
Located in Cologne’s on-trend Belgisches Viertel (Belgian quarter), Monsieur Courbet is a multibrand menswear store with a difference. Offering everything from clothing to accessories to records, the space holds a carefully curated collection of all that is cool and on-trend, with an overall aesthetic that is fashion-led with a little edge.

Museum Ludwig
